The first coffee trees were planted along the Red River in what is now Temple County, Texas in 1847. The first roast of coffee was made at this location in 1849. The beans were brought to Temple by a man named George Henson and his son-in-law, James W. Williamson. In 1851, J.W. Williamson bought some of the original Coffee Bean Plantation and started growing coffee there until his death in 1902. In 1865, John Denton started roasting coffee on his farm near Temple for three cents a pound. By 1870, that price had increased to two dollars per pound. By 1912, it had increased to five dollars per pound! In 1924, Wernher Schultz began buying land near Temple and began roasting coffee there for $1 per pound from local farmers who grew their own fruit trees for him to roast their beans on site! That same year he opened up Schultz's Coffee House which became one of America's first independent espressohouses! The name of the town comes from the fact that it is situated on the Temple Fork of the Trinity River. The town was founded in 1881 by Methodist missionaries. The community grew rapidly due to its location and access to nature. Today, temple is a vibrant community with a rich history and culture. The first settlement in what is now Temple was established in 1851 by Jedediah Smith and his party as part of their attempt to cross the Montero River into Mexico. After spending two years traveling throughTexas they reached this new land on March 21, 1853. When they arrived they named their new settlement after James Fenton who had led them across the river two months earlier. In 1854, Fenton donated land for a Methodist church which would become one of the most important buildings inthe community-the First Baptist Church of Temple (later known as First Baptist Church of Dallas). In 1865, upon becoming president of Texas A&M University, Sam Houston granted an honorary degree to Rev. James Fenton for his contributions to education in Liberty County .
