Temple is a small town in Texas, located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,238. The name "Temple" comes from Mission San Antonio de Padua (or "The Alamo"). The first Baptist church in Temple was built in 1872. In 1881, J.M. Turner built a cotton gin and mill on what is now Elm Street in Temple. From thisINGO (JP) achieved national prominence when it processed raw cotton for Texaco until its closure during the 1970s and 1980s. In 1888, Ulysses S Grant visited Temple while he was campaigning for president; he spent two days at the local Methodist church there before returning to Austin to campaign against John F Kennedy. In 1907, temple became a city with an estimated population of 1002 people and was incorporated as a municipality on November 15 of that year under charter number 4362 by City Councilman Wm Hinton Sr., who served as Mayor from 1911 to 1914 and 1917 to 1919; councilwoman Belle Cary also served as mayor from 1907 to 1909 and 1915 to 1917. A fire destroyed most of the business district on Main Street in 1914; but new businesses began to reopen after being rebuilt on Third Street near current day Elm Street: Jardine's Warehouse (1914), The Smith House (1915), The Ford Store (1920), Brownie's Restaurant & Bakery (1920), Empire Oil Refinery & Pipe Works Company (1922), and Kressen's Drug Store 1924 - 1925; all three buildings still stand today: Kressen's Drug Store #1, build 1912-13; Kressen's Drug Store #2 1933; Empire Oil Refinery & Pipe Works Company Building 1935 - 1938.; Brownie's Restaurant & Bakery Building 1961-. Temple is a small town in Kleberg County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,575 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kleberg County. Temple was founded in 1892 by local farmers and cattle ranchers, who named it after their religious center in Palestine, Illinois. The current temple building was built in 1912 and dedicated to the memory of Houston Methodist Church pastor John W. Temple and his wife Clara Ann Temple. In 1907, oil prospectors discovered oil reserves near Temple and began drilling for oil there. In 1915, the first wells were Completed at 3 miles (5 km) west of town on what is now State Highway 361. By 1922 production had reached $1 million per year from 7 wells; however, due to an overproduction problem caused by an incorporating a new town along US 362 called Eldorado that year into Kleberg County without giving Temple proper development rights as part of its boundaries, production dwindled over time to about $500000/year only before finally ceasing completely in 1979 due to environmental concerns about gas drilling operations on public land adjacent to the facilities . The Ella Baker Center for African American Studies opened its doors in 1984 as one of Baylor University's largest educational institutions outside of Dallas/Fort Worth area with satellite campuses throughoutHouston metropolitan area; this included Temple which became one such campus providing distance learning opportunities for students majoring in all disciplines including humanities and social sciences which have been offered through TEMPLE Online Learning platforms since Fall 2009
