But when General Sam Houston commissioned Captain John B. Hood to establish an independent Republic of Texas in 1836, the men who founded Terrell were among those who fought for independence. After the war, many Texans decided that their new republic couldn't survive without access to Indian Territory, which lay east of the Texas River. So in 1848, Colonel James Fenton established a post at what is now called Fort Worth and began surveys for an eastern boundary. In 1849, Fenton's successor as colonel arrived and discovered that there was already someone living on this side of the river - a band of Comanches called the Kiowa. The Kiowa were a powerful Native American tribe and they had been raiding settlements along the Brazos since early years of our history. When General Sam Houston learned about this conflict, he ordered his cavalry to protect settlers from these Indians. This action earned him national fame and made him one of America's most popular leaders during its earliest days as a country. In 1850, Congress passed legislation authorizing President Franklin D. Roosevelt to purchase land east of the Arkansas River from Mexico in order to create Utopia Ranch National Monument (later renamed Mount Whitney National Park). So when FDR announced his intention to make this area into a national park in 1933, everyone got excited! When President Harry S Truman issued his decision making document establishing Mount Whitney National Park over 1 million acres (500 miles) wide within present-day Colorado Springs County - it was all over! The area now occupied by Rocky Mountains include parts of what are today Terrell and Springdale counties!
