The Texas City Air Force Base has been providing air support for the Texas Department of Defense since 1942. The base is also home to the Central Intelligence Agency's Austin Headquarters. In 1966, the Air Force activated its first squadron at TXCAB, which was redesignated as 4th Fighter Squadron in 1978. In 2002, the base activated its 5th Fighter Squadron and in 2006 it activated its 6th Fighter Squadron. Each squadron flies Lockheed Martin F-35A fighter jets. In 2005, when then-Governor Rick Perry announced his plans to deploy U.S. military forces to Iraq, Colorado Congressman Roy Blunt came up with the idea of sending a gift to TXCAB in memory of these service members killed or wounded during Operation Iraqi Freedom: A Bluebonnet Award for Excellence in Service and Support by an American Citizen would be given annually to an individual who makes significant contributions to their community while serving in uniform from across the United States Military spouse/family member(s). On December 3rd 2006, Brigadier General Dell Richardson unveiled Bluebonnet Award recipients at TXCAB; among those honored were Major Christopher Dillard (5FIS), USAF (Retired), Capt Daniel Wolk (5FIS), USMC (Retired) and Specialist Garrett Kappes (1st Class DSGT).
