The history of Texas City, Texas can be traced back to the early 1800s. The area that now makes up Texas City was first inhabited by the Chisholm tribe of Native Americans. In 1821, a group of Texans led by Sam Houston located what is now Texarkana, Arkansas and founded the Republic of Texas. The city was named after George Rogers Clark, who had served as Governor of Louisiana in 1824-1825. Texarkana grew rapidly due to its location on the Red River and its access to shipping routes. By 1830, Texarkana had become an important commercial center with a population of over 5,000 people. However, during the 1840s and 1850s violence erupted between local Indian tribes and settlers in the area. This led to a large number of American Indian fatalities inTexarkana – including many members of the Chisholm tribe. In 1849, following military campaigns against Indians in Oklahoma Territory, Congress passed legislation granting United States citizenship to all Native Americans living within ten miles of any federal office or post west of Missouri lines. As a result, many Texans living east of Missouri came under Ulysses S Grant’s jurisdiction when he became president in 1865. Grants intended for these easterners were instead used to populate newly acquired land eastward into Kansas Territory – which included much present-day Texas City (the original name for Texarkana). In 1870–71, construction began on what is today known as Municipal Hall Annex #1 on Main Street near Railroad Avenue. It was one of several buildings constructed at this time along Main Street as part of an effort by Texarkana officials to improve their cityscape and promote economic development. At its completion two years later, Municipal Hall Annex #1 represented one among several examples illustrating how county government could be centralized beneath one roof in order to Facilitate Economic Development within Municipalities throughout America! Municipal Hall Annex #2 also opened in 1870–71 along North First Street just north-of Railroad Avenue; this building also served as District Court House until it was replaced by District Attorney’s Office Building across Railroad Avenue in 1938; both buildings are still extant today inside Municipal Hall Annex #1! A new courthouse called County Courthouse No 1 was completed adjacent to Municipal Hall Annex #3 at NW Third Street corner circa 1905 but has not been preserved or listed on National Register; it may have been destroyed during World War II occupations! In 1902 Brazoria County annexed from Harris County; this createdtxcitypolygon around south side town limits extending upto US 90/US 95 corridor (now Loop 410) about 12 mi long approximatelywidening from NW 2nd St & Elm St NE corner Today there are few remaining reminders from early history such as those aforementioned Commercial buildings built before railroads arrived - instead most evidence resides around downtown TXC which preserves some pre-railroad pioneer architecture like Old Jail and Post Office
