The Colony, Texas was established in 1836 by the Texans as a post on the far side of the American River. The land was purchased from the Comanche and Kiowa Indians, and soon became an agricultural center with wheat, cotton, and cattle production. In 1846, General Sam Houston ordered an army to be deployed to suppress a slave uprising in Texas. The Texan artillery unit (the 6th Cavalry) was mobilized for this purpose and landed at Corpus Christi Bay on November 5th. After disembarking their horses and baggage, the troopers were met by Native Americans who threatened to scalp them if they did not surrender their weapons. After being forced into slavery by Mexican troops during the Mexican-American War, some Texans revolted against Spanish rule in 1848. Massachusetts lawyer John Brown led a group of followers westward through Texas to San Antonio where he proclaimed an independent republic called Republic of Austin on December 12th. On January 2nd, 1850, Brown's forces reached Austin and ushered in a new era of cowboy culture that would last until statehood in 1901. In 1861, Confederate general Robert Ewell advanced northward into Texas seeking revenge for his family's defeat at Bull Run two years earlier. He reached Corpus Christi Bay on November 4th but was unable to march his army inland due to lack of supplies and reinforcements. Instead he assembled his force along Corpus Christi Harbor where he prepared to launch a surprise assault on Texan forces at Sabine Pass near Galveston Island. However, just before hostilities could begin Spanish warships arrived with orders from Mexico City not to fire upon Confederate vessels while within international waters! As a result of this faux pas Commodore James Fenton surrendered all ships anchored around Corpus Christi Bay without firing any rounds! abortive attack + unauthorized admiral presence = aborted mission!
