The Colony, Texas is a small town in the county of Tarrant County, located in the center of the state of Texas. The population was 582 at the 2000 census. It lies on U.S. Route 287, about 15 miles east of Fort Worth and 25 miles west of Dallas. The first Europeans to visit The Colony were Frenchmen who founded it in 1836 as a trading post on what is now known as Slaughter Road. They named it after their colony in Canada, La Colonie (the colony). The original settlers were men from New England and Canada who had come overland via land grants from the United States government. In 1839, when Antonio López de Santa Anna became president of Mexico and began construction on his grandiose Plan for Mexican Reconstruction, he ordered San Fernando de Bexar (The Colony) to be burned down because it served as an example to other towns that would support him during his time as governor of Texas. Santa Anna intended to rebuild Mexico according to his own vision rather than following American models which he saw as model for all America's future growth. In 1845-1846 General Martín Perfecto Cámpora fought an unsuccessful war against Santa Anna's forces at Palo Alto Creek near San Fernando de Bexar; this event helped spur development around The Colony and also contributed to its eventual success in becoming a thriving community once again after being burned down by Mexican authorities two years earlier. In 1849–1850 Colonel John Hogg established a school at The Colony which became one of the most successful schools in Texas during that time period; Hogg was also responsible for developing what is today known as Hoggtown within The Colony boundaries – this area included much of Slaughter Road today and portions of present day Lakewood Village north of I-10 between Loop 610 South and FM 3471). In 1850–1851 Governor James Kenedy sent Major George Crockett with 1,500 soldiers onto what is now Floresville Creek where they laid siege to Adobe Walls (later renamed Crockett Barracks) – this event helped spur development around Floresville Creek while also contributing to its eventual success in becoming a thriving community once again after being burned down by Mexican authorities two years earlier). After annexation by the United States during492–1907 The Colony continued through various changes including name changes (to Cameron City then Arlington), incorporation into new counties (Marshall County then Tarrant County), loss or gain of land due to ranching operations (such as Eagle Ford Ranch), until finally declaration bankruptcy by federal officials in 1907 due largely to inadequate financial management skills among its leaders.–Today only traces remain remaining throughout much farmland located within modern-day Cameron City off US 287 just eastof FM 1960
