The Colony, Texas is a small town located in Johnson County, Texas. The population was 1,814 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Garner with nine cents in stamps per day from San Antonio. At that time there were only two families living in the town limits: James Hargrave and his family who farmed land around what is now Central Square; and Capten Elisha Payne’s family who lived on Elm street east of Center square (now North First Street). On July 25th of that year mail was received from Fort Worth with news of a great battle between Ulysses S. Grant’s army and Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna near Tampico which resulted in the death of 5 Texans – three men - Capten Elisha Payne (aged 66), Samuel Fenton (27) and James Hargrave (age 36). This event became known as “The Battle at Tampico” because it took place within miles of where later colonists would establish their community. This early development can be seen through remnants of pioneer architecture still extant today such as old Frontier Inn located on West Main Street which operated from 1865 to 1901; or Handy Store built in 1872 near present day Commerce Square which served as a blacksmith shop until 1971 when it became a convenience store; or even earlier frontier buildings such as Old Barracks built about 1847 south of current day Elm Street across from present day Brown Elementary School.) It wasn't until 1883 when one white man - Captain John A Garner - decided to set up his own business in what is now The Colony: A store called “Garner's Cotton Mill” which manufactured cottonseed oil for local farmers. That same year also saw the establishment of schools: Goodwin Female Institute founded on West Main Street by Mrs. John Bunkley giving education to rural women; And then Central High School opening doors for students on October 1st1883 under construction next door to Garner's Cotton Mill after years spent fundraising by Mrs..Bunkley & her husband Drury Caddick Sr., Mgr.(1850-1924) responsible for building many famous Austin schools including UT Austin & Stoneleigh School District #2’s main campus.)
