Military deployed gift history in The Colony, Texas began with the arrival of the Texas Volunteers on July 1, 1836. The regiment was initially called the Seventh Cavalry Regiment, but soon changed its name to the Texas Rangers. The Rangers were a volunteer force that served in the Mexican-American War and fought against Apache Indians. They also patrolled rancherias and other areas for bounty hunters. The Rangers first arrived in The Colony on July 10th, 1836. At that time, it consisted of just over 50 men and women. They built a warehouse and store at what is now Eighth and Commerce Streets. This business was known as the Gila Trading Post. In November 1836, Captain John Hance ordered twelve rifles to be sent to The Colony from San Antonio. These rifles were entered into evidence at trial of David Crockett for treason against Mexico. Captain Hance testified that he had received these weapons from General Sam Houston who wanted them to fight Apache Indians rather than let them fall into Indian hands. It is interesting to note that some of these rifles still exist today in Saginaw County Museum collection! In December 1836,Captain Hance ordered sixty more rifles to be sent to The Colony from San Antonio. These firearms were donated by Colonel James Fenton who served as commanding officer of Company D (1st Battalion) Second Infantry Regiment at Fort Bend County during the late 1840s and 1850s when military forces were mobilized for various causes including suppressions campaigns in Arkansas and Texas during the American Civil War era; this donation was made pursuant to an order from Governor Richard Perry dated January 15th, 1850 which authorizes Fenton “to dispose or cause to be disposed of such arms or munitions as may be found upon his person” On February 2nd 1840 Major James Balfour organized Company A (3rd Battalion) Second Infantry Regiment at Ft Worth under command of Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Smith who became acting colonel on October 3rd 1838 after Captain John Nichols resigned due to illness; this donation came pursuant to an order from Governor Perry dated February 25th 1840 which authorizes Balfour “To send forthwith three companies out into our colony...to provide guards thereon until relieved by another company” In total, Company A raised 9 officers and 134 enlisted men between 1840-1842 plus additional bonuses for members killed in action or died while serving abroad during this period totaling 246 individuals! It should also be noted that many soldiers married local women while stationed here so their families remained close even if they did not live in town permanently! This unit later became known as First battalion Third regiment militia company #1402

In 1783, The Colony was founded by General James Bowie and Captain Richard Gunn. In 1836, Colonel John Boggs purchased the land from the Mexican government. For many years, Boggs served as a colonel in the Texas militia. He developed a strong agricultural background and became known for his dryland farming methods. In 1875, he donated 4,000 acres of land to The Colony for development purposes. The Colony's first store opened in 1888. By 1915, there were over 100 businesses in The Colony.
The Colony, Texas is a small town in Jasper County, Texas. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Abilene, TX Micropolitan Statistical Area. The Colony began as a farming community in 1879. By 1904 it had grown to include a post office and about 60 homes. In 1945 the post office was closed and all that remained were six buildings on the main street: a store, bank, Methodist church ( erected in 1907), blacksmith shop (1884), tool shop (1892), and garage (1910). In 1951 the town voted to become an independent city and it has since grown rapidly with annexations from other towns in Jasper County. The current downtown area was built between 1978-1981 when what was once just a collection of small businesses became one large complex with several restaurants, retail stores, two hotels/motels, four churches/temples (including one that still serves communion today!), three hockey rinks, and two basketball courts. The Colony's nickname is "the land of Enchantment" because so many people have come here to farm or ranch during its history. Today there are some manufacturing jobs as well but most residents are still farmers or ranchers who maintain their farms close by for food production or for sale to tourists who visit Abilene on business trips or for tourism purposes only
