Naval ships have been a part of the Texas navy for over 200 years. The First Texas Navy was formed in 1836 and served under Commodore John F. Smith during the Mexican-American War. The Second Texas Navy was created in 1849 and participated in the Civil War as a Confederate naval squadron. In 1865, the Second Texas Navy disbanded and its vessels were transferred to the Union navy. The Third Texas Navy was established in 1875 and served during Reconstruction. In 1898, Texan forces fought alongside US forces in the Spanish-American War and later became a part of US Naval Forces Europe. The Fourth Texas Navy was established on 12 December 1942 and served as an escort vessel for USS Enterprise (CV-6) during World War II. On 15 October 1945, Enterprise collided with USS Tuscaloosa (AO-3) off Galveston Island and both vessels were destroyed by fire; the FourthTexas Navy ceased operations on 16 October 1945. Today, only two pieces of former FourthTexasNavy Vessels remain: CV-2 is at Corpus Christi Museum of Marine Arts & History while AO-1 is at Gulfport Naval Shipyard where it serves as museum ship #1

By 1840, the town had a population of over 350 people. In 1848, Colony became an independent republic under the leadership of Captain John Fetterman. The Republic lasted until 1851 when it was conquered by Mexico. After the Mexican occupation, many of the colonists returned to Texas and various other parts of the United States. Some stayed in Colonial while others moved into newer settlements such as San Antonio or Austin. Today, there are small communities located around Colony with similar namesakes such as Powellville and West Virginia City.

The Colony, Texas was founded in 1853 by Captain John F. Bassett and his wife Elizabeth. The Bassetts were the first white people to set foot in what is now Texas. The Colony was a small farming village of about fifty-five people, located on the banks of the Colorado River. In 1855, Captain Bassett decided to move the Colony to a more permanent location due to concerns about possible hostile Apache Indians. He erected a stockade around the village and began building a fortification that would serve as its nucleus for future years. In addition, he gathered supplies and started up a irrigation system in order to grow crops for their own sustenance and provide food for the Village’s population. In 1861,Captain Bassett celebrated his birthday with an audience of important Texans including Sam Houston and Antonio López de Santa Anna. At this event, he announced that he had formed a government for Texas consisting of himself as Governor, Manuel Micheltorena as Secretary of State, James Kenedy as justice of the peace, General David Hunter as Major-General of Militia and Elisha Kane as colonel of cavalry. Captain Bassett died in 1865 after serving many years in office at The Colony
