Tyler is a small town in the Texas Panhandle, located about 100 miles (160 km) northeast of Dallas. The population was 9,824 at the 2000 census. Tyler is one of four towns in Johnson County and is part of the Tyler, TX Micropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for General James A. Tyler who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Governor of Texas. The first post office in what is now Tyler was established on December 21, 1881. In 1902, a school opened and by 1909 there were three churches: First Methodist (founded 1881), Baptist (opening 1865), and Presbyterian (1892). On January 1, 1925, Tyler incorporated as a city. The growth of Tyler has been due to its location at the intersection of two major highways - I-35W and US 69 - as well as its status as an agricultural center which has produced crops such as cotton, corn, soybeans and wheat since before World War II. Today's economy primarily depends on agriculture with some light industry including manufacturing plants for guitars and furniture/acoustic guitars; trucking services; information technology; cattle ranching; timber harvesting; restaurant/bars; gift shops; and retail stores having typical American goods such as clothes, appliances, recreation items etc.; however there are also several computer companies that have set up shop here over the years The city government is limited to providing police services within its limits while all other departments are controlled by Johnson County sheriff's department which provides law enforcement within city limits As one might expect from a small town located so close toDallas metropolitan area it has had struggles with crime rates but recent studies show that this does not reflect evenly across all areas within Johnson County Tyler's motto may be "It takes more than just words to make life worth living"

Tyler, Texas is a city in Johnson County, Texas. The population was 21,816 at the 2010 census. The Tyler metropolitan area had a population of 491,651 as of 2011. Tyler is located on the southern edge of the Johnson County seat, Huntsville. It is also within the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what became Tyler was Stephen Fetterman and his family in 1827. In 1828 Wm Bynum founded an adobe ranch near present day downtown Tyler and named it after himself - Baylor Ranch. In 1830 John Hogg settled about five miles east of town on land that would become part of today's eastern side of downtown Tyler (Hogg Place). In 1837 Fetterman's son-in-law James Guthrie arrived from Missouri with his family to homestead near present day Yatesboro along Buffalo Bayou. Guthrie named his new community Guthrieville after himself and laid out a square blockinitially measuring only 10 rods by 20 rods but later expanding to 30 rods by 50Rodios (approximately 1/4 mile). This early growth pattern continued until well into the 19th century with few changes other than initial settler location and names
Tyler, Texas was founded by the Tyler family in 1836. The city was named for General Robert E. Lee who had killed President Mexico's general at the Battle of San Jacinto.
