Universal City is a city in Texas, United States. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Antonio County. The first Europeans to explore and claim Universal City were Spanish explorers Jusepe de Torres and Nicolás de Oviedo on July 2, 1519. They named the area "Hidalgo" after Hernando Cortés's army that had invaded Mexico four years earlier. In 1836, General Sam Houston purchased land in what is now Universal City from José Joaquín Frias y Costilla for $5,000. On January 29, 1837, Houston established the Republic of Texas at Universal City as an act of defiance against Mexican rule over Texas. With its own government and laws, Universal City became an important center of civic life during this time period. On November 17th 1861, Confederate forces attacked Union Fort Sumter in South Carolina while Ulysses S. Grant was commanding the Union army there; this event would later be called the Battle of San Jacinto which resulted in five dead American officers and thirteen American soldiers deaths out of a total force of thirty-six Americans killed or wounded during that battle alone. Universal City is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first European to visit Universal City was Francisco Moreno on November 16, 1795. He named it San Francisco de las Americas y de la Victoria (First Spanish Settlement of America and Victoria). On July 24, 1836, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna established the Presidio of San Antonio del Rio Grande as the first American military outpost in Texas. The presidio's mission was to protect settlers from Comanche Chief Red Cloud's Indian band and to govern their land until they could be granted citizenship by Mexico. In 1839, Universal City became official seat of Hudspeth County when Judge James Bowie moved from Trinity River Colony to become its first county judge. On January 1, 1840 David Sanger arrived in Universal City with his family from Missouri; he had been appointed by Governor Mirabeau Biddle as territorial governor for Webb County. In 1840–41 Sanger surveyed much of what is now downtown Universal City based on maps prepared by George Fenton Lewis and John Hoggener Jr., two surveyors who had accompanied him on his trip across Texas." In February 1861 during Confederate forces' attempt to seize Austin by storm along UPRR railroad tracks near present day West University Place - an event known as the Battle of Galveston - Union Brigadier General Robert Ewell ordered Captain Nathan Bedford Forrest's 4th Georgia Infantry Regiment to fire upon a crowd that had gathered around Fort Bend Bridge attempting to cross into Austin proper following news that Confederate General Houston had surrendered at Monterrey southeast of Galveston Bayou
