Fresh roasted coffee beans are a centuries old tradition in the Uvalde area. The first coffee bean roaster in what is now Uvalde was founded in 1868 by Don Francisco Alvarez. The business grew rapidly and by 1890, Alvarez had built a large and well-equipped roasting plant on the southeast side of town. The early pioneers of the coffee industry in Texas were men like Don Francisco Alvarez who brought roast quality to the state. Coffee beans from Brazil, Colombia, and other parts of Latin America were roasted here and these beans became known as "Uvalde" or "Texas Coffee." These beans were ground into flour and used to make breads, pastries, gasoline additives, etc. In 1936, a group of businessmen led by J.B. Payne purchased the Alvarez roasting plant and started production of whole bean coffee again under their own name as Payne's Roastery & Coffee Company. In 1949, they moved their operations to their current location on Exchange Street in downtown Uvalde which remains their present day business address. Today Payne's Roastery & Coffee Company continues to produce high-quality whole bean coffee for everyone to enjoy starting with our Signature Blend products such as Colombian Arroz (green) and Breakfast Stout (dark cocoa). We also offer Unique blends like our Brazilian Lobo Antigo blend which has been aged for over three years in Portuguese coffeeshells!
