Uvalde, Texas is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 585 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dallas County. Uvalde was founded in 1871 by Captain Lorenzo Mata and his wife Maria de la Garza from Pecos Indian Territory. The first post office in Uvalde was established on October 2, 1870, with Wm. Hennessey as its first owner and occupant. On November 15, 1872, the town had a population of twenty-one people when it incorporated under the name of "Barton". The name "Uvalde" originated from Spanish words meaning "the place where cattle were pastured." In 1890, J.W. Erdman organized what became known as the First Methodist Episcopal Church in Uvalde; this church still meets today inside City Hall on Main Street. In 1902–03 (due to an oil boom), Uvalde annexed part of Fort Worth and began to grow rapidly as a result of new oil discoveries in North Texas.; during that time there were no schools open for students living outside Uvalde other than vocational schools run by businesses or churches which charged high rates for tuition and room and board; many people returned home during these boom times because they could not afford to leave their homes without earning money through some form of work or trade In 1916 annexation completed brought more people into town including local ranchers who started raising cattle on newly acquired land near Loop 610E/ FM1960 south of town In 1928 construction began on what would becomeCity Hall; this building still stands today within City Hall Park off Main Street On July 1st 1969 incorporation into Dallas County occurred followed by annexation into that county just before Christmas 1970 making Uvaldi its fulltime municipal government . Today it is one of only a few cities in Texas without any annexations recent history has shown that annexations are often beneficial to city governments providing increased services such as police protection and infrastructure development while also attracting new businesses

Strong came from Kentucky to find land that would be beneficial for cattle ranching in centralTexas during the 1881 census. He purchased 432 acres (1 km2) off present day I-30 near present day Uvalde from John Wickersham for $5 per acre ($100/km2). This purchase marked the beginning of what would become one of largest cattle operations in Southwestern United States, lasting until 1921 when it folded due to lack of available land or other competition from larger operations elsewhere in Southwestern United States. In 1903, James B. Strong donated an unused lot adjoining his original ranch to become County Courthouse Square where Uvalde citizens could come together to transact their business oaths before county officials or enjoy public exhibits put on by local artists during rodeo season at nearby San Marcos Park
