The Marine Corps has been a part of our community in Vernon, Texas since World War II. The unit that currently serve in Vernon was first constituted on December 12, 1944 as the 5th Marines. The regiment sailed to Iwo Jima during the war and fought in some of the most intense combat of that conflict. Since then, the unit has seen many deployments throughout various parts of the world. They are especially well-known for their service in Operation Enduring Freedom, which resulted in over 100 dead and thousands wounded members of their battalion. In 2009, they were awarded a Presidential Unit Citation for heroism during Exercise Flintlock Jade mountain biking event. Today, marines from Vernon continue to contribute to our country through its military campaigns and operations all around the world. They play an essential role in ensuring that we can keep our citizens safe and secure at home and abroad.

In 1945, after World War II ended, the division was disbanded and its members were sent home. Vernon, Texas is a small town located in the far west corner of Cameron County, Texas. The community was established in 1892 by settlers from Illinois and Indiana. Vernon became an unincorporated community when it was annexed by Cameron County in 1907. The population of Vernon peaked at 1,500 in 1910 and decreased to fewer than 100 by 1920. However, the population growth rates throughout the years have been relatively low due to a lack of intermarriage and out-migration among Vernon's residents. In 2000, Vernon had a population of 375 people. The history of Vernon began with settler Fenton Beukes and his family who arrived in 1892 from Illinois. They built a cabin on the site that would become Vernon School House. A few year later, they erected another cabin which served as their home until 1904 when they sold it to Wm Haines for $1 per acre (about $40 per square mile). Haines had come to live in Vernon after traveling through the area for business purposes. He had heard about fertile land near Cameron County that could be developed and he decided to make this his new home basecamp for his enterprise. In 1907, Vernon incorporation took place under Republic Act No. 7987 which designated territorial boundaries between Cameron County and Williamson Parish (later Dallas County). At that time, there were only two other communities within its boundaries: Fort Worth (which was then part of Arlington) and Plano (which was then part of Austin). In 1911, the population of Vernon reached 500 but slowly declined due to several factors such as loss of jobs opportunities during World War I and prohibitionism among those living within its borders due to Prohibition laws enacted at that timeous locale (Texas).[1] By 1920 however, Vernon's population had decreased below 100 again due primarily to out-migration amongst its residents; this trend continued until 1990 when it increased slightly thanks largely to military relocation programs conducted by local veterans organizations.[2][3] As a result of these movements over time one can say that Vernon has seen quite some change over its lifespan!
The Vernon area was settled in the early 1800s by families from Illinois. From here, they traveled to what is now Texas and started a farming and ranching community. The first post office in Vernon was established in 1836, and the first store opened in 1845. By 1860, Vernon had a population of around 100 people. In 1865, the town was renamed after General John C. Fremont as part of a territorial name change. The town experienced growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s with an increase in population to over 1,000 people by 1910. However, during World War I (1914-18), Vernon saw significant violence and loss of life as residents supported the war effort. In 1925, Vernon incorporated as a municipality. After experiencing growth again through the 1920s and 1930s, Vernons population reached its peak at around 4,500 people by 1940 however it began to decline slowly throughout the 1940s due to changing economic conditions and rising crime rates which led tovernon becoming one of the most dangerous towns in Texas
