The first military installation in Vernon was Fort Worth and it was used as a garrison for the Republic of Texas. In 1836, Fort Worth was renamed Fort Stockton and it became an artillery fortification. It played a key role in the Battle of San Jacinto and later fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1859, Fort Worth became another military installation when General Sam Houston assigned it to serve as a garrison for Texan forces located on the Rio Grande. The fort served until 1865 when it was decommissioned and its facilities were sold to a group of investors who built what is now known as Alamo Hotel. The hotel served as Headquarters for Confederate General Robert E Lee during the American Civil War. Following the war, Alamo Hotel passed through several hands before coming under control of General George Armstrong Custer’s cavalry regiment during World War I. It then reverted back to ownership by Texan businessmen after World War I ended. In 1925, General John J Pershing transferred his headquarters from Camp Bowie near Mount Hood to Ranger Barracks at Vernon which remained an army post until 1959 when it closed down due to budgetary cutsbacks within the U.S Army structure. Rangers stationed at Ranger Barracks continued their operations until 1975 when they were phased out completely with all units relocated back into Camp Bowie underArmy command following that year’s closure of that particular installations headquarters unit at Ranger Barracks). After ranger barracks closed down there have been intermittent attempts over time by various groups or individuals to keep those buildings or portions thereof operational as tourist attractions or museum pieces however no such effort has yet been successful; everything remaining currently functions more like storage depots for various civilian agencies operating out of town than functioningmilitary installation/post/. Since ranger barracks closed down most people believe that if anyone wants access to either building they would have had to go through Army security which is not really true since both buildings are still locked up even though no one has ever been able to gain entry (and there has never been any evidence suggesting that anyone actually tries). Vernon, Texas is a small town located in Cameron County, Texas. Vernon was founded on December 10, 1887 by James A. Vernon and his brother-in-law, John W. Boyd. The population of Vernon was 2,492 at the 2010 census. The first school in Vernon was built in 1892 and operated by the Ladies’ Aid Society of Vernon. There were no schools until 1915 when the first public school opened in town. The first teacher in Vernon was Mrs. Denton who taught for three years before moving to Pasadena. In 1916, Mrinala Smith became the first female teacher in Vernon when she joined the staff of Valley High School. In 1922, Mrs. Smith left to become principal of Lubbock Independent School District #2 and Mrs. MacAllister assumed her position at Valley High School from 1922-1927; however, she left again to become principal at Hutchins Elementary School (now part of Bob Jones HS) from 1927-1939; then finally returning to teach briefly at Valley High School from 1939-1945 before retiring as an assistant principal at Hutchins during World War II; finally becoming principal there from 1945 until her retirement in 1951 which ended with her death one year later after serving longest terms as headmaster of North Arlington Elementary School (now part of South Arlington Middle/High School). After her death, Drusilla Beavers took over as headmaster and served until 1962 when she retired due to ill health status also ending one year later with her death aged 80 years old making Vernons oldest female headmaster ever at that time One hundred fifty students attend Canyon Creek Junior Senior Academy which serves grades K-4th grade The town has a library which is open Monday thru Friday 9amto 4pm or 7pm on Saturdays and Sundays

The population of Vernon declined over the next few decades until it hit its low point in the early 2000s before rebounding slightly in recent years.
