It grew rapidly during the antebellum years due to its location on a key trade route between New Orleans and San Antonio. In 1890, Victoria became one of several towns within the new Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area when that city was created from portions of seven counties in central Texas. The town's growth continued into the 21st century as more people moved to Victoria for job opportunities and education opportunities in nearby Austin. Victoria has two high schools: Victoria High School (grades 9-12) and Christmastown Elementary/Middle School (grades kindergarten through 8). Victoria was founded on October 7, 1857 by James P. Austin and his brother John A. Austin as Pecan Creek Settlement. In 1865, Victoria was renamed after the Empress of Russia, who had just become empress following her successful defense of her country against an invasion by Mexico under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. The name "Empress" stuck for many years because so few people in Victoria knew about her or even knew she existed until the 1990s when a biography of Empress was published and started to bring more attention to Victoria. In 1893, the first post office in Cameron County opened in Victoria with mail from Asbury Park, New Jersey; it continued to serve until 1907 when it moved to Waco (later known as Waco City). In 1916-1917, during World War I and while serving as Mayor of Victoria Falls (then called Falls Church), Edwin Edwards developed an oil well in what is now downtownVictoria which led to his later nickname "The Oilman". After the war ended he sold most of his assets but kept some land and built a new home on it which still stands today - now known as Edwards House Museum In 1942-1945 during World War II JF Sutherland served as captain and operations officer with USS Prairie du Chien (PG-2) patrolling off shore waters near Corpus Christi Bayou from December 3rd - January 6th 1945 . On that day we sighted something unlike any other vessel we had seen before .. two Japanese submarines were surfaced very close to our ship without any warning or provocation... They were trying to get away cleanly but we forced them into position using long range gunfire then boarding party raided their submarine station where they found three torpedoes tube tops etc... One torpedo hit our shipkilling twelve out of eighteen crewmembers including my captain.....After that experience I never felt so alive or proud as when I stood on board USS Prairie Du Chien giving orders over the loud speaker .... During those days my career as a Naval Officer lasted fifty five years...
