Victoria, Texas is a small town located in northeastern Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 2,878 at the 2000 census. It was named after Queen Victoria of England. In 1911, the Victoria School District was formed from parts of the Hudspeth County school districts and Victoria became one of its schools. The early settlers in Victoria were farmers and miners. This area had been part of Hudspeth County since 1836 when it was organized as part of the Brazos River district. William Hogg settled on a cattle ranch in what is now centralVictoria in 1864. Hogg's heirs continued to live there until 1935 when they sold their land to the Commonwealth of Texas for $1 million dollars ($ today). In 1907, Mr. and Mrs. John Arita donated land to create a new school district in Hudspeth County which would include Victoria proper and six additional townships: Big Sandy, Cartersville, Clarksville (now called Georgetown), Fayetteville (now called Waco), Hubbardton (now known as Round Rock), and Spring Branch (now known as Manor). The first Public School building opened in 1909 with sixty-six students from five townships attending morning classes before being enlarged to four classrooms and a gymnasium in 1912 with Helpman Construction Company providing construction services for only two years before being taken over by local merchants who built an addition that still stands today that cost $2 million dollars ($ today). In 1916,. Mrs. Arita donated another piece of land which became home to the current high school campus housing classrooms and science labs as well as football fields; this addition also cost around $3 million dollars($ today). Today’s School District buildings date back to 1928 with Mrs. Arita’s gift becoming their primary denominator; these structures have been used both for public education purposes as well as private functions such as special events held at them suchas fund raisers or weddings receptions during recent term sessions! On November 5th1920 citizens ofVictoria gathered together under leadership including Mayor J Risley with authorization from then Board President J C Watts to organize themselves into an Industrial Workers Of The World Local 10 East side street cornered by First National Bank & Trust Company parking lot behind present day High School Building on what is now east side street corner opposite intersection of Highland avenue N&W corner
