In 1865, George Waddell founded the city’s only newspaper, theVictoria Advocate. Waddell worked closely with his friend A.J. Smith at their publishing company to start printing newspapers in Victoria – one of the earliest presses in Texas. Starting out as a small regional paper, the Victoria Advocate grew quickly into one of Texas’ leading voices during its time as an agricultural center and cattle market capital of the state. By 1906, when it merged with another Austin-based paper to form The Chronicle Herald Newspaper Syndicate, The Advocate had become one ofTexas’ most important media outlets serving both rural Texans (particularly those living east of San Antonio) as well as urbanites throughout central TX and northcentral LA (including Victorville).
