Polk ordered the United StatesArmy to invade Mexico and liberate its citizens from Spanish rule. This event is known as the Mexican-American War and was fought between America and Mexico. In 1846, General Samuel Houston was elected president of Texas and announced his intention to make Waco the capital of Texas. This event marked the beginning of an era when military occupation became increasingly common in Texan towns such as Waco; this trend would continue until after World War II whenTowns like Waco began to experience rapid population growth due to immigration from Latin America and Asia .
