The Texas Army National Guard has been deploying in support of the U.S. military since World War II. This deployment history can be traced back to the early 1940s, when the Guard was activated to help protect American citizens during the Great Depression. The Guard has played a significant role in many wars and conflicts over the years, most notably during Desert Storm and Operation Neptune’s Spear. Today, the TXARNG provides critical infantry, artillery, armor and air support to our country's military efforts. In 1957, the TXARNG became part of The United States Army Reserve as part of its transformation from an army-based reserve into an all-volunteer force. As part of this change, soldiers were required to serve two years on active duty before being able to deploy with their unit overseas. In 1982, the Guard was again mobilized for Operation El Dorado Hills after several terrorist threats against American soil. Once again,the Guard distinguished itself by its performance during this important mission. Today, there are over 1 million members of the TXARNG spread across 21 states and five federal territories - including Guam (an unincorporated territory), Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands - providingbered units for potential deployments anywhere in America or around the world at any time of day or night.
