The Texas Army National Guard was organized on February 14, 1861. The first unit to be raised in the state of Texas was Company H of the 1st Regiment Infantry (later redesignated as the 1st Battalion, 5thTexas Infantry). The battalion was mustered into Service on April 15, 1861. It served until September 6th when it too was disbanded for lack of volunteers. On December 17th, 1861, a regiment called the 2nd Brigade Combat Team (1st and 4th Infantry) was created from parts of Companies I and M of the 3rd Regiment Infantry (later redesignated as the 3rd Battalion, 9thTexas Infantry). The brigade served until May 1865 when it too disbanded because there were not enough volunteers to maintain it. In 1868 a regiment called Company A (2d Battalion) Texas Cavalry was organized at Waxahachie and mustered into service on January 12th. The squadron served until July 1870 when it also disbanded because there were not enough volunteers to man it. A new regiment called Company K (1st Battalion) Texas Mounted Rifles was Organized on November 8th and mustered into service on December 12th. It served until October 1886 when it also disbanded because there were not enough volunteers to man it. In 1892 a regiment called Company L (3d Battalion) Texas Volunteer Cavalry was organized at Waxahachie and mustered into service on January 7th. It served until December 1893 when it also disbandd because there were not enough volunteers to man it.
