Weatherford is a small town inoodles County, Texas. The population was 1,813 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Weatherford is located on the banks of the Trinity River, about 30 miles (48 km) west of Austin and 50 miles (80 km) east of Dallas. The town was founded in 1849 by Samuel Weatherford as a trading post on the cattle drive from San Antonio to Lubbock. In 1860, it became an agricultural center when landowner John Hogg donated 300 acres (120 ha) to weatherfords for development into a town. The first store opened in 1865. The town's namesake was Samuel Weatherford II who served as mayor from 1892 to 1895 and 1898 to 1901. Weatherford, Texas is a small town in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 553 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Webb County. Weatherford was founded by pioneer settlers in 1881. The first post office was established in 1882. In 1907, the name of the town was changed to Weatherford because of increasing oil production near the community. The first schools in Weatherford were made up of students from local farms and homeschooling families until 1903 when a school building became available for use by the Webb-Fenton School District. That year, Wernham Hogg High School opened its doors for students from Weatherford and surrounding rural areas as well as Fenton. In 1914, Hughes-Wright Elementary School opened its doors to grade schoolers and would become one of the most important educational institutions in Weatherford with over 30 years of service under its belt until it closed in 2001 due to budget cuts. From that point on until 1966, all grades were offered at Prairieview Baptist Church which also served as our primary athletic ground and home field during those years! In 1966, after more than 50 years of serving OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT (and many more during periods when it wasn’t open), Prairieview Baptist church closed its doors permanently due to deteriorating facilities (mainly due to water damage). We now offer pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade classes through our daughter’s academy which we call “Prairieview Academy”! Our biggest beneficiary has been our daughter’s academy who have seen their enrollment grow by 350% since they opened their doors! As we look back on these long times ago days there are some things that continue to amaze us such as how WEBSTER COUNTY has not had a tornado outbreak within ANY YEAR since far back my time here!
