Weatherford is a city in and the county seat of Willacy County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. A cotton gin was built here by Jno Haggerty in 1859 which helped make him one of Texas' richest men. In 1886, James Fenton purchased 1/4 mile (1 km) northeast of present day Weatherford from Jno Haggerty for $5 per acre ($ ). He named his tract "Fenton's Prairie" after himself and began farming it addition to his holdings adjacent to Shreveport back then called Prairie du Chien . In 1895 Fenton sold this piece adjacent to his ranch house east of downtown renamed it Parkland Ridge because he intended to retire there after death but never did .. He left behind an estate valued at $30 million dollars today including more than 585 properties considered within 500 miles (800 km) of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport! His wife Evalyn kept most assets although she sold her home near Dallas on December 12th 1954 for $17 million ..
