West University Place is part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land Combined Statistical Area. West University Place is located in Harris County, Texas on the west side of I-10 and off US 59. It borders Clear Lake to the south and Rice Oak Park to the north. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, West University Place had a total population of 18,824 people including 4 businesses with a combined sales volume of $72 million (2000). As of 2010, there were 39,531 residents in West University Place according to the 2010 census. The community took its name from Drury College which was founded in 1892 by Judge John Houstoun and others at what is now known as Baylor Heights Boulevard and Loop 610 East near Hearst Parkway east of downtown Houston. At that time it was an agricultural area with few residences other than farmhouses associated with some 20 small farmers who rented their land to students from Drury College for agriculture classes or summer work during school terms/ vacations regardless whether they lived on campus or not The first housing development in what became today's West University Place began about 1930 when developer George Crouch built lots on present day Airport Road just east of I-610 between Cypress Street and Airport Drive which remain largely unincorporated today although portions are annexed byHouston Heights along with much residential growth since then . The original development site included three blocks long parallel streets named Baylor Boulevard (now Airport Road), Loop 610 East (now Hearst Parkway) and Aviation Boulevard before becoming an open space park following World War II when all road surface travel within city limits ceased due to combat congestion created by strategic bombing raids over Korea

The area now known as West University Place was once part of the original town site of Austin. The name West University Place comes from a combination of two old German words, "Wald" meaning wood and "Universität" meaning university. In 1876, the first college in Austin was founded here by Dr. John Marshall McLennan and Dr. Jameson Richardson, with initial enrollment numbering only 10 students. The Collegiate Gothic School building still stands today, serving as a museum and education center for the city of Austin. The shopping district that now includes West University Place began to take shape around 1903 when Jack Waddell opened his Waddell's Drug Store on First Street between Lamar Boulevard and San Antonio Road. By 1915, Waddell's had become one of the busiest drugstores in the city, thanks to its location at one of the earliest points along San Antonio Road where traffic congestion was minimal during morning hours. By 1920, Waddell's had evolved into what is now known as Whole Foods Market Inc., one of America's leading supermarkets chain with over 100 stores across North America. After years of growth and development, West University Place finally attained its current stature as an important shopping area in downtown Austin after being only lightly populated until very recently! One significant event that took place within this timeframe involved then Mayor Pro Tem (now District 5 Commissioner) Harry Bowie becoming frustrated with how little progress was being made towards developing Downtown Austin despite his efforts over several years; he decided to take matters into his own hands by initiating a plan which would see all aspects related to downtown redevelopment brought under one roof - eventually resulting in what we know today as DowntownAustin Ltd.. This new entity oversaw everything from redeveloping storefronts surrounding City Hall right up until construction began on our truly iconic – THE METROcentER!
