White Settlement was founded in 1847 by John White and his family. The early settlers were farmers and the community became known for its coffee beans. By the 1860s, White Settlement had a population of around 150 people and it began to produce coffee beans for local consumption. In 1865, the first Dutch-owned grocery store opened in White Settlement and soon afterwards, the town became known as the "Coffee Capital of Texas." The town prospered until the early 1900s when Prohibition led to a decline in business. In 1915, White Settlement was merged into nearby Lubbock.
In 1836, the United States of America acquired Texas from Mexico. The area now comprising the state of Texas was part of what was known as Spanish Louisiana. After months of negotiation and fighting, the American forces under General Sam Houston won control over this area on July 6, 1836. The new territory included parts of present-day Colorado, New Mexico and most of today’s Oklahoma. The land north and east of the Rio Grande had been claimed by Canada (the future province of Alberta) before Mexican independence in 1821. As a result, when Texans became self-governing in 1845 they decided to annex all but about five miles (8 km) of Canadian borderland. When California gained statehood in 1850 it too sought annexation by the US but this failed because Congress refused to give its approval until Mexican officials had withdrawn their claims southward to within Utopia Township – a distance that would have stretched into what is now Corpus Christi County. In 1862, after much discussion and consideration due to growing population density in central Texas and fears that slavery might be moved into newly acquired areas near Denver, President Abraham Lincoln signed an act declaring Texan land “free” for white settlers without giving any indication that he considered such settlement a desirable or practicable policy solution to problems with Indian Removal looming ahead. White Settlement began rapidly following Lincoln’s proclamation and soon enough there were well over 1,000 families living on several thousand acres (500 ha) along both sides of the San Antonio River between missions San Fernando de Milagro and Presidio del Norte (later Fort Worth). Settlers clustered around small mission properties while larger landowners built houses or set up cattle ranches on hundreds or even thousands of acres (yards) granted them byMexican authorities during secular times when acquiring land was not obligatory for Catholic priests serving as missionaries among Native Americans living westward under Spanish rule.

White Settlement began as a small farming community in what is now Cooke County, Texas, in the late 1800s. In 1902, white settlers founded the town of White Settlement on the floodplain of the Barker River. The town was named for Dr. James H. White, an American doctor who had served in Asia and Africa. The white settlers were interested in developing the land they had bought and were not content with having to share it with Native Americans. They set up their own government, built their own schools and churches, and started to create a society that resembled European civilization. The white settlers introduced new crops such as cotton and potatoes to the area which helped make White Settlement a success.
The white settlement of Texas began in the 18th century with the arrival of Englishman, James Fenton. In 1781, Mexico ceded ownership of Texas to America and Spain became the dominant power in the area. Mexican traders settled in what is now Houston, and by 1836, about 60% of Texans were Anglo-Saxon Protestants. The American Revolution led to American annexation of Texas in 1845, which increased Anglo-Saxon dominance over Texan society as a whole. In 1861, Confederate forces occupied part of Texas during the American Civil War. On November 8, 1865, Union General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia after a three-week battle that ended with more than 150 killed and 600 captured. This event marked the end of slavery inTexas and signified an important victory for northern Reconstructionism over southern conservatism.
