Wichita Falls, Texas is a city in and the county seat of Wichita County, Texas, United States. The population was 269,711 as of the 2010 census. Wichita Falls is located on the Arkansas River in southeast Texas. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The City of Wichita Falls was founded on December 20, 1907 by citizens of nearby Fort Worth and begun receiving federal funding to build a municipally owned water system on November 8, 1908. On July 1, 1912 the City annexed portions of Denton County along with present-day Tyler and Grand Prairie for $1 million in what became known as " annexation day". The annexation created an urbanized area that spanned from Wichita Falls to Garland Lake. On February 14, 1915 WFTS first aired live from downtown Wichita Falls when it moved from Mutual Broadcasting Company's studios on West Seventh Street to its current location on Main Street near Commerce Center Plaza. At that time WFTS was one of three contemporary radio stations innorthwest Texas (the others being KRLD (AM) and KTXS (FM)). In 1938 WFTS became affiliated with American Radio Corporation during its initial ownership by Paley Brothers interests inradio broadcasting through their Arlington Heights affiliate ARRO; this affiliation ended when American Radio Corporation merged into larger broadcasters ABC Corporate Services Incorporated later that year. On October 15, 1951 WDTV signed on as a CBS affiliate after former Chicago station WBBM-TV switched to network programming following the network's launch several days earlier; at that time WDTV was Cumulus Media's newest television station outsideOf North America due to original owner Republic Broadcasting Company having withdrawn all television operations less than two months previously due to financial difficulties stemming from World War II-related wartime costs (CW already had a transmitter atop Mount Carmel). After WBBM-TV shut down fifty years later in September 2006 WDTV rebranded itself "CBS 5" effective November 3rd share-wise with sister station KLIF/KLIV becoming CW affiliates: this change followed Klifs move from analog channel 6 northward onto UHF channel 47 around 1990 while also moving KLIVs digital signal off high frequencychannel 10 south onto UHF channel 29 providing VHF coverage within Wichita Falls proper since previous incarnation as KRNL effective August 3rd 1978).

The history of Wichita Falls can be traced back to two small villages that grew up around what is now downtown Wichita Falls: Cimarron and Haysville. These villages were founded by Scots-Irish immigrants who had come to Methodism Base Camp on the Arkansas River during the early 1800s in order to escape religious persecution in their homeland of Ireland. While these settlers did not create Wichita Falls, they did help organize it as a commercial center within Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) and helped make it one of America's most important frontier towns during its early years as a republic under President James K. Polk's administration –a time when many Texansigrated eastward to escape economic discrimination and Americanization programs instituted during Reconstruction following the American Civil War

Wichita Falls became a important center for the cattle industry, and the city developed into one of the largest in Texas.
