The city was founded on November 11, 1871 by Mormons who had journeyed from Nauvoo, Illinois to seek gold at what would later be known as Wichita Springs (now Guthrie). The Mormon Battalion arrived at Wichita Falls on November 9th and started building their campgrounds two days later. On December 5th they were joined by other Mormon pioneers from Missouri under captain John Dillard and began construction on what would become Fort Worth’s first post office. That same day 7 men died when a wagon loaded with goods overturned while travelling down a hill leading to town square; this event is now commemorated annually witha chuckwagon rally through downtown Wichita Falls each year on First Street between Elm and Oak Streets
