The Wichita Falls Naval Shipyard was founded in 1919 and has been a part of the Navy since that time. The shipyard is home to many Navy ships including the USS Wichita Falls, which was donated by Wichita Falls Mayor Harry Hays in 1918. When the USS Wichita Falls was donated, it became an iconic symbol of Wichita Falls. It served as the city’s primary naval vessel from 1918 until its retirement in 1978. Then-Chief Petty Officer First Class Ed Donnelly opened and served tablecloths filled with various prizes donated by members of Congress! That same day saw also what would be known as “Navy Day USA Forever?” A variety show called “Naval Academy Showcase 1948? which featured singers including Betty Buckley and Harry Belafonte? originated at Forbes House that night!

Wichita Falls, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Johnson County. The area that makes up Wichita Falls was first settled by Native Americans in Prehistoric times. The Wichita people are thought to have been ancestors of present day Texans. In 1836, Captain James Fenton founded what is now Wichita Falls with four other men on land that he had Purchase from Sam Houston while he was serving as General Santa Anna's lieutenant general. The town grew rapidly due to its proximity to Baylor College of Medicine, cattle ranching, mining, and oil production beginning in the early 19th century. In 1881, when Houston became governor of Texas and offered $10 million for a railroad through Johnson County if built by private enterprise within 10 years or $15 million if done by government enterprise within 20 years (the so-called "Railroad Bill"), John Hogg bought an interest in the proposed line from William Juhlbeck for $6,000 (). This acquisition set off a chain reaction that led to major development in Wichita Falls over time: In 1899–1900 Railroad Commission member Murchison obtained planning permission from Austin City Council for Armour & Co.'s Armour Yards () on Commerce Street near downtown; this project was followed two years later by Union Carbide's plant on East Main Street (). These advances were among many which helped create what is today known as "The Rustbelt". In 1907 Mayor Davenport dedicated new streetscape features including curbside water fountains (), blocks east of First Avenue (), sidewalks between First and Fourth Streets (), granite steps leading up Toombs Avenue () along Center Street (), brick piers at intersections (), large blocksading posts () at each main street intersection (later replaced with wrought iron) and ornamental trees (). By 1910 Tyler Mines had opened on Powder River Index near downtown (); this triggered increased development around Tyler Mines including several hotels (now Regal Tower), several stores (now Kipling Plaza), cotton warehouses (now Cottonwood Mills), numerous residences (now Embassy Towers), factories such as Armour & Co.'s Armour Yards and Consolidated Glass Workshops (. . .) along with some small businesses
