The town’s name comes from John Fenton Wiley, an early settler who purchased land near the present day intersection of FM 2421 and FM 651 in 1879. In 1910, Wylie had its first grocery store and became home to two telephone companies: Western Electric Telephone Company #1 (later AT&T) and Texaco Telephone Company #2 (later KRLD). In 1951, Wylie connected to the interstate highway system when it received US 71 as its official route. However, this did not mean that business stopped inside the limits of Wylie; on the contrary, merchants continued to find ways to reach their customers even though they were no longer within spitting distance of I-30 or I-35. In 1978, local entrepreneur Donny Hargrave opened what would become one of Wylie’s most well known businesses: Hargrave’s General Store & Grill serving up AmericanizedTexans cuisine since 1977—the first restaurant west of Interstate 35 with drive-thru service! Later that year, Hargrave reopened his restaurant as Walt Disney World Park's EPCOT Center guest attraction - becoming just one more local business linked into DFW history! Today, much like back then - there are many shops open late into night including several which offer delivery or takeout services! There are also numerous bars/restaurants throughout downtown offering everything from burgers to seafood!!!

Wylie, Texas was founded by William H. Wylie in 1881 as a cattle ranch. The town was named for the pioneer settler, Wm. H. Wylie, and the original citizens voted to change it to Wylie in honor of him on July 4th, 1889. The city was incorporated on November 17th, 1903. The population of the city peaked at 15,000 in 1910 but has since declined by about 30% over the years.
