Cedar City is a town in Cedar County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Cedar City is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. Cedar City was founded in 1847 by Jacob Hamlin and his family as a stopping point on the Great Salt Lake Trail. In 1851, Cedar City became the seat of government for all of Weber County when that county was created from parts of Dixie County and Juab County. The city also gained town status in 1898. The first store in Cedar City opened on December 3, 1847, according to history books published in the mid-19th century. By 1860, there were five stores open in CedarCity with a population of around 100 people each. A post office was established in 1861 and remained open until it closed on January 12th, 1951. The first school opened in what is now downtown CedarCity on October 6th, 1851 under the name “Haven’t You Heard?” School District No 2 which eventually became Southern Utah Education Association (SUEA). On January 17th 1850 John Crouse organized an expedition led by Wm Henson which explored Bears Ears National Monument (). Aftermath raids began against local Paiute villages early that year leading to several dead and many injuries for both sides involved; these raids continued intermittently through much of 1850s In 1862 Abraham Lincoln became President due to America's involvement in the American Civil War; Lord Palmerston appointed him Chief Justice of Utah Territory as well as Governor of Arizona Territory On March 25th 1863 James Wigglesworth attempted unsuccessfully to assassinate Ulysses S Grant during a meeting at Fort Bridger near present-day Parkerville Grant later noted: "I did not like this man one iota" In 1865 Union General William Jourdan arrived at Fort Bridger following his ill-fated march across country from Bentonville Arkansas to Provo Utah after routing Confederate forces during their Spring Offensive On July 24 th 1865 he ordered Maj Gen Abel Hennessy paraqueted[7] about 10 miles eastward along Cottonwood Creek near present day West Valley Village between Greenlea Canyon and Echo Hills just south off I-15 towards Beavercreek Junction where he discovered over 9000 Confederates camped without orders creating much excitement among attacking troops who thought they had numerical superiority ); Hennessy crossed back over creek & set up headquarters close by before withdrawing/ deserting []
