Cottonwood Heights is a census-designated place located in Davis County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. Cottonwood Heights is part of the Ogden–Clearfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cottonwood Heights was platted on October 11, 1887 by Captain Folsom and his partners J.P. Woolridge and Wm.H. Brownlow under the name of "Willow Park". The original post office was established at Cottonwood on October 25, 1889. In 1903, the town was renamed to honor Cottonwoods Creek which flows through it southeastward from where it rises in the Wasatch mountains to join the river south of Cedar City. On December 5, 1925, Cottonwood Heights had its first school when Mrs. Atherton opened up a small one room schoolhouse near what is now eastbound I-15 and south of Center Street in Cottonwood Hills subdivision #1 (now known as Willow Park). Mrs. Atherton taught second grade until her death in 1951 then continued to teach for another 43 years until her retirement in 1990; she was succeeded by her daughter Mildred Denny who also taught until her retirement in 2006.) For many years after Mrs. Atherton's death school attendance here fluctuated between single grades and kindergarden through fourth grade because there were not enough classrooms available for all of Davis County's students during those early days before schools were built throughout Davis County modern day boundaries: east became Cedar City proper while west become Logan (later St George), Layton (later Provo) and finally Cottonwood Heights proper situated just outside today's boundaries of Provo/Ogden city limits
