The first European to visit this area was Francisco Vaca de la Vega on July 7, 1540. Spanish missionaries arrived in 1776 and began converting the native people to Christianity. In 1847, the Mexican War ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and Mexico ceded control of what is now San Miguel County to the United States. The first store in Highland was established in 1854 by C F Hamrick and his brother-in-law John Beardsley. A post office wasestablished at Highland in 1861, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1863 William J Hill built a cabin on land that would become known as Highland Park. He started cattle ranching there and continues to operate today as one of the largest operators of ranches in San Miguel County. The community began rapid growth after he built a schoolhouse, store, ball field and other infrastructure which became an important part of many towns throughout rural America during that time period
