Holladay is a census-designated place in Utah, United States. The population was 1,823 at the 2010 census. Holladay is located in Kane County. The town of Holladay was founded by Captain James K. Holladay on March 10, 1868, while he was serving as battalion commander with the Mormon Battalion during the Great Basin Expedition. At first it only consisted of twenty men and their families; however, within two years Holladay had organized a permanent community with a post office and store. A sawmill and grist mill were built soon after and began to process lumber from the surrounding mountains for export to other parts of the United States. By 1875 Holladay had also constructed a schoolhouse and one or two small businesses; however, it would not become an economic center until much later when transportation became available to bring goods into town from miles away. In 1908 John A. Widtsoe donated land to build what would eventually become Brigham Young University–Hawaii (BYU). The university grew very rapidly and by 1920 there were over 1,400 students living in town along with many businesses that supported BYU’s operations such as grocery stores, hotels/motels, printing plants, auto supply stores and more. During World War II Grocery Outlet Corporation (GOC) which was based in Holladay produced millions of dollars worth ofWar bonds for the government which helped contribute to building military installations all around Utah including at nearby Herriman Field Airport where B-29 Superfortresses were assembly plant drivers delivering foodstuffs directly to military bases across America! In 1945 GOC moved its corporate headquarters out of town but continued making products right here at our old site until they sold everything we made plus some new facilities near Provo airport!
