A post office called Leyton was established in 1876, and remained in operation until 1907. The first store in Leyton was built by William H. Pritchard on Main Street on November 3, 1876. The first school in Layton was built on the corner of Second Street and Highland Avenue on October 9, 1877 by Mrs. Gertrude Beardsley as an aid to local children who could not attend school due to lack of money or transportation.
