The Burlington National Guard has been a part of the United States since 1777. The Guard was originally organized to protect the town of Burlington from Indian attacks. In 1824, the Guard was redesignated as a militia and placed under the command of the Vermont General Assembly. The National Guard was first called into service during World War I when members were drafted to fight in Europe. After the war, the National Guard joined other state militias in providing security for statewide elections. In 1961, the Vermont Legislature passed a bill creating the Burlington National Guardsmen Museum and Memorial Park in honor of those who have served in our military. The museum is open to all and features exhibits on military history, culture, and tradition. The park also provides a place for citizens to gather after exercises or events related to our military history.

The Guard has been organized since 1792 as a militia regiment within the Continental Army. during the early 1800s, the National Guard was also used to suppress Loyalist sentiments in New York and Pennsylvania. After the American Revolution, many states created their own militias, which eventually became part of the National Guard. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared all state militias disbanded and merged into the National Guard. Today, there are more than 350 branches of the National Guard across America.
Burlington is a town in Vermont, located on the banks of the river Burlington. The population was 13,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Burlington-South Burlington-East Burke micropolitan statistical area. The Town of Burlington was incorporated in 1792 as one of two towns in Rutland County. The other town was East Bennington. In 1837, Burlington acquired land east of present day Route 9 and south of present day Route 12 to create what is now known as Downtown Burlington. In 1854, Rutland County and Vermont were combined into one state and Burlington became a part of that new state. The first post office in Burlington opened in 1855. The growth of industry around the turnof century led to increased demand for housing and jobs throughout much of downtown Burlington which caused some development northward along State Street between First and Second Streets - this called North Center City or NCC for short - while also contributing to heavy street traffic congestion on Broad Street near today's Waterfront Park (originally called Lake Champlain Park). In order to ease traffic congestion, city planners developed South Portland which would include businesses and shops on both sides of Broad Street between Market and King Streets; this proposal met with strong resistance from northerners who felt they had been taken advantage of by those who had built South Portland while they had remained largely uninvolved with its development. As a result, Mayor James Pierpont created a committee chaired by Drury Richardson to study ways to improve transportation within the city limits without taking away business from South Portland which resulted in the creation of River Front Drive (now Washington Boulevard) as an alternative means for accessing South Portland from North Center City through I-91/I-84 where it meets US 10 outside Of Manchester Township on what is now known as Riverside Drive (another name given to River Front Drive following its reopening in 1994). In addition, developers quickly realized that developing southbound on I-91/I-84 from Interstate 91W out towards Manchester Township would have required demolishing many homes currently occupying properties northward along that road including several blocks south of today's US 128 /Route 127 intersection just past mile marker 287 on I-84 about midway between Manchester Township and Randolph Parish - so instead developer pressure resulted in Third Avenue being designated as an alternate route across I-91/I- 84 from Interstate 91W out towards Randolph Parish bypassing downtown until it reaches current day US 128 /Route 127 just past mile marker 287 on I- 84 about midway between Randolph Parish and Manchester Township
Burlington was first settled in 1755 by a group of English farmers led by Captain John Montresor. The town was named after Burlington, England, where the captain had been stationed as a military officer. The new settlers built their homes and businesses near the river, and soon developed a busy commercial district. By 1800, Burlington had become one of the most important settlements in Vermont. In 1802, it became the capital of the state. Burlington prospered until the mid-19th century when its growth slowed down due to economic recession and population decline. However, Burlington has since emerged as an important cultural and political center in Vermont.
