The growth of downtown Alexandria whittled away at Fauquier Court House until it closed completely to traffic for several months each year during construction of Washington Monument (July 28,1848 – April 14, 1851), then reopened for about one week every year for another decade whileMONROE AND HIS COUNCIL BUILT THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT (April 14–September 6, 1851). After years without significant progress on replacing Fauquier Court House because no one wanted to live near an old courthouse that had been designated as surplus property by President George Washington himself and essentially abandoned by most Virginians after he moved his operations to Baltimore in 1796 due to competition from Baltimore’s Naval Yard - former Governor Thomas Jefferson offered cash considerations if developers would build him a small courthouse next door at Monticello - only six men responded; four Built Monticello; two withdrew before completion; One building was used as Ulysses S Grant’s birthplace until 1938 At last replacement project started: first stage: re-creation of original court house using historical materials available ..... Second Stage: erection of new building using modern technology ..... Third Stage: conversion/remodeling existing building into modern office space . . . Fourth Stage: installation new facade . . . Alexandria, Virginia is a city in Fairfax County,Virginia. The population was 16,844 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fairfax County. Alexandria is also the central business district for both Northern Virginia and Prince William County. The city was founded on April 14, 1754 by George Washington as Winchester Point on the north shore of James River between Chesterfield and Alexandria Bay. In 1871, when Alexandria became an incorporated town, it adopted its present name of Alexandria after then-President Ulysses S. Grant's daughter Alexandra (1837—1920). On November 5, 1924, during World War II, Alexandria joined Arlington County as one of 11 cities in America that formed the United States Army Air Forces Command Center at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio; upon their disbanding in 1945 they reverted to their original names as cities within Arlington County. The first development in what would become Alexandria took place along James River Valley Road near modern day Potomac Avenue and First Street; this area would come to be known as Old Town or Englewood because of its wooden homes dating back to before 1800. Englewood became a borough in 1900 and thenceforward played a major role in local politics with residents electing officials such as Mayor John Fenton and Councilwoman Nella Hughes Merenda In 1862 General Robert E Lee ordered his forces across the river from Fredericksburg to move against Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant at Bull Run; this engagement resulted in over 50 deaths with many more injured including Lt Colonel James Longstreet On May 12th 1871 Census data shows that Englewood had a population of 377 In 1925 following World War II most American Cities merged into USAAF command centers which were called "Wright Field". This left Englewood without any authority so on November 5th 1924 they merged back into City of Alexandria
