Arlington, Virginia is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 771 at the 2000 census. Arlington has been the home of the U.S. Military Academy since 1834 and is also known as "The Garden City" for its lush green lawns and tree-lined streets. The area now known as Arlington became part of England after the American Revolution, and thus had no resident military until 1782 when George Washington founded the U.S. Military Academy there to train future generals and diplomats. The first real settlement in what is now Arlington occurred on May 10, 1784, when two families from Portsmouth, New Hampshire built a house on land that would later become part of Arlington Heights Cemetery. #4 Connaught Place was their home until November 14th of that year when they sold it to Colonel John Armstrong for £2 per acre (the equivalent of $52 per square mile). In 1792 General James Ross moved his army camp from Alexandria to Fort Worth in order to protect Texas from Mexican forces under Antonio López de Santa Anna who were threatening Mexico City with war if Texas didn't give up independence from Spain. On July 25th of that year Austin's brigade came within six miles (10 km) of Fort Worth before being driven back by three brigades under General David Hunter including one commanded by Captain Richard Henry Lee which forced Austin to retreat towards Dallas where he placed his headquarters over what is now called White House Hill on June 12th 1836 while his main force fought its way through the Mexican lines north of San Antonio de Bexar into Texas territory becoming an executive branch Deptford Colony US Land Grantee dated February 14th 1835 which was ceded by Mexico January 16th 1840 arbitration between Sam Houston & President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna resulted in Houston getting property east side Oftown Creek Road about two thirds inside present day Arlington Cemetery lot number 6 crawfish pond creek road intersection modern day White House complex southeast corner old post office building
