In 1865 Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to attack Union troops encampment at Fredericksburg instead of retreating after being ordered not to do so by Ulysses S. Grant himself; this led to the Battle of Antietam which ended with Confederate loss though some 5500 casualties on Union side alone (estimated). By 1865 most Americans had turned against their South Carolina counterparts over issues such as slavery/states’ rights, however many Virginians continued to support them until after Richmond fell in April 1865 following a three-month siege by Union forces under Sherman connecting Petersburg with Lynchburg via Army Corps Of Engineers crossings over James River (now called Roanoke Rapids Bridge).
