The Arlington National Guard was established on July 16, 1776, when the Virginia General Assembly created a regiment of militia to protect the colony of Virginia. The brigade also served as an honor guard for George Washington and his Presidential inauguration in 1800. In 1825, it became a permanent part of the Army and was redesignated the 1st Regiment Infantry (National Guard). The regiment's colors were purchased by the city of Arlington in 1881. It was reactivated as an infantry battalion in 1942 and re-designated as the 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment (national guards) on May 25, 1944. On November 15, 1948, it became one of two brigades activated to combat Viet Nam War veteran shortages that ultimately disbanded on December 31st due to budget cuts.
Today, Arlington National Guardsmen serve throughout America through Reserve Officer Training Corps units and detachments stationed at Fort Belvoir (VA), Fort McNair (MD), Joint Base Andrews (MD), Fort Myer (VA), homeported at Naval Air Station Patuxent River (MD) and participating in various ceremonial events throughout our nation.

Arlington is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 71,844 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fairfax County and home to the Arlington National Cemetery. The first permanent settler in what would become Arlington was Captain John Smith who arrived in 1607 and named his new land "Isle of Wight". Lee created the post of Arlington Station on land east ofpresent-dayArlington Heights due to its strategic location: it lay on both banks of the Potomac River, just upstream from Mount Vernon, making it easy for supplies to be transported across the river to Army camps located around Washington D.C.. As Arlington grew, so did its need for housing; streets were laid out such that today's downtown area is composed largely of Victorian homes built between 1871 and 1925.
In 1872, Congress appropriated $10,000 for a school in Fairfax County which would eventually become Harwood College; this donation became known as "The Arlingtons Gift." The college opened its doors on October 15th, 1873 with twenty students.["History/Arlington - History Of Arlington Towne"] The college moved to its current location on West Fourth Street in 1911 and remains one of Northern Virginia's most respected institutions today. On September 25th, 2008 Mayor Michael Nutter announced that plans are under way to build an additional building on Ronkonkoma Avenue adjacent to Harwood College which will house previously vacant space within Anheuser Busch Inc.'s Corporate Campus now part of Ballston Village development.

In October 1871, Arlington, Virginia was incorporated as a town. It became the capital of the United States in 1790 and remained so until 1865 when it was moved to Washington D.C. The first sheriff of Arlington was George Catlett and his office operated from an old house on Second Street between Key Street and G Street. In 1836, Arlington married Anna Maria Child, who gave birth to John Fenton Child in 1837 and Eleanor Everett Child in 1840. Anna Maria died before her husband did, leaving him with two young children to support.
The town rapidly grew due to its location near the Potomac River and its access to transportation including ferryboats from Georgetown Landing on the river's north bank across the Potomac River to Alexandria on the south bank. By 1860, there were over 1,500 residents in Arlington proper; by 1870, there were more than 6,000 people in the town limit including some 900 slaves or free blacks living off white landlordism.
There were many initiatives undertaken by citizens within the limits of Arlington during this time period that have been considered seminal elements of later development: establishment of a school district (1857), creation of a fire brigade (1861), initiation of plans for land use zoning (1868), founding of a library (1872), initiation of plans for street names (1875), establishment of an early waterworks system (1877), passage of laws authorizing incorporation as a town (1879) and passage of laws providing for equal representation in local government through wards (1901).
It is interesting to note that not one but two bills about moving the capital from D.C.–the first proposed in 1861 and then again proposed but never acted upon in 1865–were sponsored by members from Arlington itself despite their city-wide status at that time! This indicates how important it was for membersordinate interests within their own boundaries to ensure continued control over key aspects of local government while also ensuring interstate travel/commerce passed through their jurisdictions unimpeded
