Chesapeake is a town in Norfolk County, Virginia, United States. It was founded by English colonists in 1614 and named for the ancient Chesapeake Bay. The population was 18,770 at the 2010 census. Chesapeake is part of the Portsmouth-Norfolk-Newport News, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlement in present-day Norfolk County was made by Captain John Smith on Roanoke Island in 1585. In 1614, Sir George Yeoman's company of 118 men set out from Jamestown on a voyage to explore the bayous and creeks that lay between Virginia and Maryland. They reached what is now Chesapeake Bay on September 10 of that year. On October 12 they built their first wooden fortification at James Fort; it served as an observation post for several months until destroyed by Indians in December 1614. In 1624 King Charles I granted a charter to Roger Williams, one of the earliest settlers in Virginia, for a new colony to be established near Williamsburg (now Richmond). The new colony was named "Chesapeake" after English Bay; it flourished until about 1629 when its members were forced to leave because of religious persecution by Puritan extremists. In 1776 during the American Revolution, the town voted not to secede from the United States due to its loyalty to Britain; however, many residents did move away during wartime while others took up arms against America's enemies (the British Empire). Afterward most residents returned home but some chose exile as well: Vermont's Patrick Henry had his famous speech denouncing slavery in Virginia's capital city on April 14, 1799; he later returned and became a U S senator from Virgina
