The Virginia Air National Guard (VANG) has a rich history that can be traced back to World War I. In 1917, the VANG was activated as part of the American Expeditionary Force in support of France during the war. The unit saw its first combat action in October 1918 when it participated in a successful attack on five German positions near Lens, France. The following year, VANG personnel were mobilized for service in Mexico City under American leadership in response to the Mexican Revolution. After hostilities ceased, VANG units served throughout World War II including deployments to Great Britain and Normandy beachhead campaigns. In 1989, the state of Virginia designated the VANG as an honorary military organization and began providing donated equipment and resources to various military branches across the state. Today, VANG members serve together with other volunteer organizations across Culpeper County playing an important role in our community. In Culpeper, VA, the United States Air Force has a long and proud history of deploying gifts to its troops. From plane tickets to jewelry, the military has sent some amazing things into soldier's lives over the years. Here are five of our favorite air force gift histories: 1) The USAF's Operation Valkyrie: In 1957, the USAF sent a Boeing 367-2B jet bomber loaded with 11 parachutes and 71 soldiers on board to bailout any downed pilots during Operation Valkyrie. The aircraft successfully completed its mission and returned safely back to base. 2) The deployment of A-10 Warthogs: In 1992, the USAF sent a massive A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft equipped with six heat seekers and 12 missiles to support NATO forces in Millennium Defense exercises off Norway. The aircraft made several successful flights throughout the exercise before returning safely home. 3) The deployment of C-130J Hercules: In 2002, the USAF sent a C-130J Hercules airplane loaded with 16 food parcels and 50 water bottles to Iraq duringOperation Enduring Freedom. The plane arrived safely back at Dover Air Force Base after making multiple drops throughout Iraq. 4)The deployment of Lockheed Martin C-5 Galaxy: In 2006, Lockheed Martin donated a modified C-5 Galaxy airplane filled with more than 1,000 pounds of humanitarian supplies including diapers for Syrian refugees and rice for Nigerians struggling through famine conditions. Upon arrival in Nigeria, the cargo was unloaded and distributed among local families living in poverty.
Culpeper is a town in Virginia, United States. The population was 9,965 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Culpeper County. The town was founded in 17th century by colonists from England who were looking for land to farm. The first settler, John Burgoyne, arrived in 1607 and named his new community after his home country, Culpeper Castle. In 1700, George Washington located Culpeper on the Rappahannock River as the site of a military fortification against French and Indian forces during the American Revolution. In 1802, James Monroe appointed Thomas Jefferson as governor of Virginia and moved Culpeper from its original location on Rappahannock River to become the capital of that state. The town's growth continued during this time with construction of roads and railroads connecting it to other parts of Virginia and Maryland. By 1830, Culpepur had reached its peak with over 20 businesses and 1,000 residents. However, during the Panic of 1837-38 which followed a series of disastrous gold discoveries throughout America,culperville experienced an intense economic decline which has never been fully reversed since then. Today culperville features a small but vibrant community full of farmers markets (spring through fall), art galleries (year-round), restaurants (including several Italian restaurants), libraries (Summer Branch Library & resource center), wineries ( including four located within walking distance) as well as many local businesses carrying both retail and office space available for lease or rent out to help support their operations.

In 1810, the town became part of Virginia and was renamed Alexandria. After the War of 1812, Culpeper experienced some economic decline until the late 19th century when it regained its former prominence as a tobacco center. In recent years, culpeper has become an important tourist spot due to its beautiful architecture and historical significance.
Culpeper was founded in 1629 by Nicholas Culpeper. In 1777, it became a part of Virginia. In 1801, it was renamed Lynchburg. It was annexed to the United States in 1861.
