In 1802, Culpeper incorporated as a village and then as a town on July 1, 1824. On December 5, 1847, its name was changed to "Culpeper" to honor General Daniel Boone who had died two years earlier. Culpeper has been governed by a Town Council since its incorporation and is part of Prince George's County government which encompasses all of the eastern side of the county including most of culpeper proper as well as parts of Bethesda and Rockville Center. In 1850, there were 4 schools in Culpeper: one boys school (John Fenton School), one girls school (Gertrude Payne School), one academy (Adam Clayton Powell Academy), and one high school (George Washington High School). By 1860 there were 8 schools: 2 boys schools (John Fenton School and Randolph Park School), 2 girls schools (Gertrude Payne School and Averill Harriman Girls High School), 1 academy (Adam Clayton Powell Academy), 1 high school(George Washington High School) Today there are just 3 schools: John Fenton Elementary/Pre-Kindergarten; Randolph Park Elementary/Pre-Kindergarten; Adam Clayton Powell Middle/Highschool
