Danville, Virginia is a small town in the Shenandoah Valley of Southern Virginia. It is located on the border of Westmoreland County and Loudoun County, just east of Interstate 66. The town is named after Colonel George Washington's father, also called George Washington. The first mention of Danville in writing occurred in 1585 when John Daniel founded an estate there. The town grew rapidly during the Revolutionary War, with troops being deployed to fight at Yorktown and Saratoga as part to support the war effort. In 1781, Major General Benedict Arnold was captured here and incarcerated for five months before he was released unharmed. After the war ended, Danville became a whaling port and then a manufacturing center for munitions throughout the 19th century until it lost its status in 1923 when it merged with nearby Fairfax to form Loudoun County. Today, Danville remains a small farming community with a population of about 12,000 people. Military deployments have been a part of American history from earliest times. With Mount Vernon as its centerpiece and surrounded by military installations such as Fort Lee (now Arlington National Cemetery), Charlottesville (now Roanoke), Dahlgren Barracks (now Brandywine College) and Camp Blanding (now Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst), Danville has long been home to military personnel stationed here at various times throughout its history. One particularly notable deployment took place during World War II; forces from Danville were mobilized to help fight against Japan near Tokyo Bay.[1] The first military installation in downtown Danville was Fort Lee which served as Headquarters for Union Forces at Fredericksburg during the Second Battle of Bull Run on July 21st 1862[2]. Later that year Confederate forces attacked Union forces under General Robert Ewell at Chancellorsvilk Creek Bridge on July 25th 1862[3]. At this point Federal forces moved into position along I-66 southbound towards Petersburg while Confederate units crossed over I-95 northbound near Grayson Court House[4]. On September 2nd 1861 United States Marines landed ashore at anchor off Point Lookout aboard USS Constitution under Captain James Hickey[5], beginning Marine recruiting operations in VA for US Civil War purposes[6]. This marks one of only two instances where Marines were used by either side in combat within Confederate territory -the other happened three years later when Marines participated in raids against Norfolk Naval Yard
