Gourmet Coffee History in Falls Church, Virginia began with the opening of The Roastery and Cafe on Monument Avenue in fall of 1996. The cafe was a small but successful operation that specialized in roasts and grinds from around the world. In early 1997, owner Rick Rubin opened his first coffee house outside of New York City – Rubin's Coffee House – which served up unique espresso drinks made fresh every morning. soon after, Rubin decided to open a second coffee house, this time in Falls Church. The new coffee house was called The Gourmand and it quickly became one of the most popular places to go for breakfast in town. In fall of 1999, Rinat Akhavan opened his own coffee shop called Akhavan's on Fairfax Street in Falls Church. This store was started as a small kiosk serving up eclectic Turkish-style coffees with natural flavors from across the globe. Later on,Akhavan's moved to its current location adjacent to Loudoun County Government Building and has continued to serve up delicious Turkish-style coffees ever since! In early 2000, Rick Rubin reopened his original Coffee House as an espresso only cafe called Joe's Café & Creamery inside the Dominion Mall Shopping Center near Pentagon Boulevard and I-495 (now Scottrade Center). Joe's Cafeteria offered customers uncompromising quality espresso beans roasted by hand each day. Customers could enjoy a variety of interesting pastries such as croissants or biscuits and gravy while enjoying their cup of espresso! In fall of 2003,Joe’s Café & Creamery closed its doors due to financial difficulties but later reopened under new ownership as HiCoffee at Dominion Mall Shopping Center! HiCoffee is now one of the most popular cafes in town featuring some amazing gourmet coffee products from all over the world!

Falls Church started as a small farming community in 1795. By 1811, it had grown to be an important stop on the road between Alexandria and Washington D.C. In 1871, Falls Church became part of Arlington County and lost its status as an independent municipality until 1984 when it was again annexed into Arlington County. It also contains several churches including St Alban's Episcopal Cathedral which was completed in 1915 and dedicated by President Woodrow Wilson; First Baptist Church which was built between 1907-1910; Mount Carmel United Methodist Church which opened in 1907; Blessed Sacrament Catholic Parish which opened in 1911; Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Parish which opened in 1934; Assemblea della Conciliazione Italiana - American Ecclesiastical Association - headquartered inside Fort Myer military complex (which houses both Camp David presidential retreats) 2 international embassies: British Embassy (opened 1922); Mexican Embassy (opened 1938); French Embassy (opened 1959). There are also several largerx businesses like CVS Pharmacy(1989), Mastercard(1996), Verizon Wireless(1999), Walmart(2001).
Brewed coffee has been a part of human history for quite some time. Coffee beans were ground and roasted by humans long before machines became available to do the same job. The first recorded coffee production took place in Sumatra, Indonesia in the 6th century AD. The Arabs discovered Java, an island off the southeast coast of Java, in 1421 and began trading with India for spices and coffee. Coffee was already being traded as far back as 1000 BC! In 1795, Dutch traders reached Java and discovered that trade with India had resumed. They soon learned that the Indian market had large demand for coffee and began importing Indonesian beans. In 1868, when American Commodore James Ketchum sailed into Jakarta on his way to find new routes in Asia, he noticed what looked like a strange type of beangrowing field at sea level on the bank of the river Tana Rama. He decided to investigate and found that this was not only a strange beanfield but also one with an extraordinarily high quality coffee! Ketchum named his discovery “Java” after King Java of Indonesia because he thought it would be more likely to be accepted by other nations if they knew about it first! Ketchum’s discoveries helped bring about World War II when Japan beganimporting huge quantities of coffees from Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). Dutch growers were able to sell their coffee at a greatly discounted price due to Japanese restrictions on exports during World War II; however, much valuable Indonesian land was lost as a result. In 1945, Allied forces liberated Java from Japan and promptly destroyed all evidence of Dutch colonialism! This event marks the end of European influence over Indonesian coffee production!

Falls Church was founded in 1743 by James Robertson and his brother David as a hunting and farming community on Fall River Creek. The name of the creek may be derived from an ancient Native American word meaning "the falls where the river cascades." Robertson decided to rename the creek after his parish in Scotland, which he had visited while on a trip to America in 1748. In 1801, when Falls Church became part of Washington D.C., it remained under Virginian jurisdiction until 1802 when it became part of U.S. territory. The first church was built in 1743 by James Robertson and his brother David on Fall River Creek near present-day Potomac Road and Indian Head Lane. It served as a meeting place for local Tories who were opposing British rule during the early years of Washington's presidency. In 1800, when Falls Church became part of Washington D.C., it remained under Virginian jurisdiction until 1802 when it became part of U.S. territory
