Herndon is a town located in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 23,361 at the 2010 census. It is included within the Washington metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1811 by Captain John Herndon and his wife Martha as a small farming community on the east bank of the Potomac River. In 1814, Captain Herndon donated land to establish what is now Herndon College. The town's first store opened in 1822. By 1830, it had grown to include a hamlet on the north side of the river and several larger settlements on either side of the James River. In 1832, General Joseph Ewell moved his headquarters from Alexandria to Fairfax Court House and began construction of his new capital city, Richmond. When Richmond became an official U.S. capital in 1785, many Virginians decided that they would not relocate to Richmond because its political jurisdiction overlapped with that of their more populous neighbor south of the Potomac River. Consequently, many residents of Herndon removed to Fairfax County when their county was established in 1790 pursuant to an act of Congress known as "An Act for founding and organizing Fairfax County." Captain John Herndon remained one of her most important founders and he continued to reside in Herndon until his death in 1840 at age 83 years old; he had been living there since its inception eighteen years earlier! Captain John's son Charles also lived longest (78 years) among Virginians - he died aged 94 years old on November 22, 1927!
