The town was founded in 1749 by Captain James Lees and his wife, Sarah Richardson. The first post office was established in 1751. In 1801, Leesburg became the capital of Prince Edward County and the first county seat of that county. In 1871, Leesburg came under military occupation from Confederate General Robert E. Lee as part of the Union Army's attempt to take Richmond during the American Civil War. Afterward, it reverted to its original name of "Leesburg." In 1959, Leesburg began planning for an expansion which would add more than 1,500 housing units and create new businesses including a large banksy grocery store and several restaurants and bars. The project was completed in 1961 and has since become one ofVirginia's most vibrant communities with over 24 shopping centers across five counties within its boundaries; as well as 12 professional sports teams playing in Major League Baseball (MLB), 10 colleges/universities (including 4 NCAA Division I schools) on two campuses within easy walking distance; plus more than 100 local recreational programs throughout all six municipalities: Little League baseball through Vineland Regional High School; fall golf tournaments at Southside Golf Club; soccer practices at our new Memorial Stadium Park...the list goes on! It should be noted that while much has changed since then - with suburbs popping up like Oak Lawn or Hanover Town Center - there are still many residents who firmly believe that their community is what makes Virginia so great!
