The Manassas Park Army National Guard unit, "The Blue Devils", was first organized on July 1, 1861. The unit was mustered in for three years and six months of service as a part of the Confederate States of America under the command of Major General Robert E. Lee. After the war, The Blue Devils were disbanded and their equipment sold off. On December 8, 1866, however, they were reactivated and re-mustered into service as a part of the Virginia Militia. They served until 1865 when they were disbanded again due to budget cuts by Governor John Adams. On April 17, 1892, The Blue Devils (now the 15th Infantry Regiment) held their centennial reunion at Manassas Park and awarded medals to members who had served during that time period. At that event also present were Colonel James Wofford (later Superintendent of schools in Fairfax County), Captain George Washington Hays (founder and first president of Stonewall Jackson's Veterans' Council), Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Pfeiffer (senior medical officer with Richmond Medical Brigade), Sergeant First Class Edward Cushing (member Navy Reserve Force) and Corporal Lewis Atherton Hardin (5th Cavalry Regiment). In 1917 The 15th Infantry Regiment became known as "The Old Guard" after being redesignated from Company F to Company G in order to match other U.SArmy units which had become racially segregated since World War I. In 1942 the regiment became known as "The Blue Devils" once again in order to reflect its original color designation which was blue light infantry units only within the United StatesArmy initially! After World War II ended there was no longer any formal military organization within Virginians separate from either State Department or Congress so on October 9 1945 all old guard veterans finally received honorable discharge status effective November 3rd! This final action by our Commonwealth's highest authorities represented an end to more than 125 years totalervice with our active duty veteran militia unit!"

Manassas Park is a census-designated place in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 56,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington D.C. The Manassas Park tract was laid out by George Washington in 1774 as part of his land grant to the Fairfax settlers. The name "Manassas" comes from an Indian word meaning "the place where the stream turns." In 1802, General James A.Armistead evacuated Fairfax Court House and took his army through Potomac Valley to Alexandria on the Rappahannock River. He ordered Captain Samuel Weems to build a road from Winchester to Fredericksburg so that soldiers could be transported south for duty without having to journey through backcountry villages. Weems built a road and named it "Avenue Ballston", after Major General William Alexander Ballston's cavalry brigade which had retreated from Saratoga campaign (1777). In 1812, when President James Ketchum issued Executive Order No. 1097 providing for civilian control of military posts in Fairfax County, Manassas Park was one of several sites chosen for such authority because its location offered unobstructed views of President Ketchum's headquarters at Mount Vernon during wartime hostilities between Great Britain and America. At first, civilians used just two shotguns per household; later they grew more numerous with rifles but were required by law to obtain licenses before engaging in any commercial activity within five miles (8 km) of any military post or installation without prior written consent from the commanders thereof - including Manassas Park which continued to be unlicensed even after it became an Army post in 1846.(1) In 1865, following the American Civil War and Richmond's surrender, Arlington National Cemetery was established near Manassas Park as part of Union General Robert E Lee's New Market operation across town.(2) By 1890 there were over 100 civilian license holders operating out of Manassas Park alone.(3) One reason for this increasing civilian presence may have been due to increased warfare – although most farmers remained subsistence farmers until well into World War I – while Arlington National Cemetery rapidly became an important burial ground for Union generals and officers killed during that conflict.(4) As late as 1930 only 2% of all burials at Arlington National Cemetery were military personnel; but by 1945 this proportion had risen TO 50%.(5) Since then there has been steady growth with nearly 60%military burials now taking place at Arlington National Cemetery outside the original park boundaries.� Most recently there has also been a significant increase (> ninety percent+) in Veterans funerals since 2001.� This growth can largely be attributed to changes within US society resulting from Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), which thrust many Americans who had served our country overseas into close contact with their veterans � both former servicemen and women � opening up new opportunities for funeral services.�

The Union army attacked this retreating force from behind and drove them back into Fairfax County; these events are known as the Battle of Manassas Park. In 1871, when Washington became a state within the United States, Manassas Park became part of Prince George's County. On April 14, 1881, during Virginia's gubernatorial election campaign against Democrat John Witherspoon Jr., Republican Adam Clayton Powell issued a speech in which he advocated using man-made lakes in Prince George's County instead of giving water rights to local farmers so that they could build canals to provide irrigation for their crops. Powell won this race and took office on May 1st1
