The Norfolk army deployed gift history in 1922. The city of Norfolk, Virginia was founded in 1758 and the first military installation in the area was a powder depot on River Road. In 1845 the first regiment of artillery, now the Norfolk Artillery Regiment, was organized and soon after made its maiden appearance at Fredericksburg under Colonel John P. Brodie. It was here that General Robert E. Lee made his famous surrender speech to American forces before they were driven back across Chickamauga Creek into Georgia. In 1922, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard built four large Navy cruisers for the United States Marine Corps entitled “Norfolk” (CP-1), “Norfolk II” (CP-2), “Norfolk III” (CP-3) and “Norfolk IV” (PCS-8). The ships were christened USS “Norfolk I’s” CVT-7, USS “Norfolk II's” CVT-8, USS “Norfolk III's” PCS-9 and USS “Norfolks IV's” PCS-10. Each ship had a displacement of 10,000 tons and could accommodate up to 1,500 Marines on board her decks including Aircraft carrier type hangars! They would serve as Flagship Ships for Commander Marine Forces Atlantic Fleet from 1935 until their retirement in 1958! The marines who served aboard these warships are enshrined with medals andaques throughout theUS Naval Service Museum in Washington D.C., just downriver from where they once lived and worked! From World War II through Vietnam our navy has seen many changes but one constant is our deployable gift history which has always been our proudest accomplishment!
