The Norfolk, Virginia coast guard has been a part of the community since 1839. The first Coast Guard station was built in Norfolk on Staten Island and the first cutter, “Hercules” was launched on July 10, 1839. In 1902, the Coast Guard Station at Hampton Roads became an Auxiliary Station and in 1954 it became an official Coast Guard Station. The Norfolk coast guard has always been dedicated to protecting our coastline and shoreline. Our station is located in one of the most important shipping lanes in the Chesapeake Bay area and we are constantly patrolling this vital corridor. The Coast Guard was created as a result of this conflict. The Coast Guard was first organized on February 2, 1796. In 1922, the Coast Guard became an independent branch of the Department of Defense. On April 3, 1954, the President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into law the National Aeronautics and Space Act Amendments which created NASA. With this new legislation, the Coast Guard began its current mission as a space agency within NASA. Throughout its history, the Coast Guard has played a significant role in both national defense and civil security. One of their most famous achievements is Operation Neptune’s Spear which rescue crew from a Spanish fishing vessel that had sunk off California in 1912. Throughout its history, however, it has also faced many challenges including Hurricane Katrina which destroyed much coastline in New Orleans in 2005 and Hurricane Sandy which hit Long Island in 2012. Despite these problems, however, the Coast Guard has always been able to provide emergency services to those who need them most.
The Coast Guard has been a part of America since the 1790s. The first Coast Guardsmen were stationed at Governors Island in New York City. In 1898, the United States signed the Treaty of Paris following World War I, which ended the war. As a result, many soldiers and sailors were discharged from service and returned to civilian life. That year, Congress passed an act creating the Coast Guard as a national security force. The Coast Guard website says that its mission is “to provide coastal security and protect our interests with vigilance and courage”.

In recent decades, however, Norfolk has made some significant progress including becoming one of America's most walkable cities with excellent public transportation options. As a result of its struggles over the years, Norwich has become an attractive place for luxury real estate development and investment as well as professional sports teams such as basketball’s Norfolk Admirals (now called the " flyover team"), baseball’s Hampton Roads Islanders (now called " The Roosters ", also played in Richmond), and soccer’s USL side Hampton Roads FC (now known as " Portsmouth ".)
Norfolk was founded in 1608 by Captain John Smith. The city is named after the Norfolk River, which flows through its center. The city's first permanent resident was Benjamin Harrison, who became the 25th president of the United States in 1801. In 1864, the city was merged with Fairfax County and became a part of Virginia Beach.
